Hollins College, a women's liberal arts college, was founded as the coeducational Valley Union Seminary in Roanoke, North Carolina in 1842. In 1854, it became Virginia's first women's college changing its name to Hollins Institute three years later. It was renamed Hollins College in 1911 and Hollins University in 1998.
